Spencer Marionettes Light Up Utah!

Freddie Spencer, longtime puppeteer and actor who lived in Santa Monica, California is now sharing his craft of creating puppets by working with the ARTS KIDS organization.

This season, each local school in the area will pick approximately 18 students from ages 8 – 11 years old to participate in Mr. Spencer’s two-hour course. During this time, each child will be given materials to create their own rod puppet.

“So far, the kids have been doing an outstanding job building their own rod puppet characters. They have come up with some imaginative faces and costumes to express their own unique style”

Mr. Spencer was born in Troy, New York and has been a professional puppeteer and creator of puppets for over 50 years. He became interested in puppets at a very early age and performed in his father’s magic and puppet show beginning at age 8.

His first professional puppeteering job was with the World’s Fair in New York in 1964 hired by well-known television and theater producers, Sid and Marty Krofft. Freddie continued to work with the Krofft organization on most of their television productions throughout the years like H. R. PUFF N STUFF, SIGMUND & THE SEA MONSTERS, LAND OF THE LOST, THE BARBARA MANDRELL SHOW, DC FOLLIES, etc. His television career went beyond the Kroffts and he worked on such children’s productions as PEE WEE’S PLAYHOUSE, WIZZLE FALLS, OKIE AND DOKEY, and many more.

In 1980, Spencer opened his own live action special effects company, Image Creators, Inc., and worked on such films as BEETLEJUICE with Tim Burton, BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA with Francis Ford Coppola, Child’s Play 111, TEAM AMERICA with Trey Parker and Mat Stone. He created and performed puppets on music videos with Garth Brooks, Outcasts, and ZZ Top. His work has appeared in many television commercials with Quaker Oats, Kellogg’s, Kraft foods, Bandai Toys, Hasbro, GMC, and Radio Shack as some of his clients. As mentioned before, Spencer has worked on television series throughout the years. Recently, he flew back to LA for a re-occurring role in the sketch comedy series, MAD TV, using a giant Ant puppet that takes four puppeteers to operate.

Freddie Spencer was nominated for an Emmy in 1989.

Since moving to Park City, Mr. Spencer is going back to his roots creating two marionette and rod-puppet shows for private parties/ events – one for children and one for adults.

Now known as The Stringman, he can be reached at (310) 202-8286, (435) 649-9553 or via email.
